The Need. . .
The statistics are staggering: In the United States alone, an estimated 4 million women are physically abused by their husbands or live-in partners every year and an average of 8 women are killed by their abusers every day. Many will try to leave often 5 to 7 times or more but the odds are against them.
With the need greatly exceeding the available resources, less than 10% of the women who attempt to break free of an abusive situation will find space in a local shelter. For those that are fortunate enough to find space, it is a very temporary haven usually 31 days or less. At this point, possessing only the clothes on their backs, very few job skills, almost no work experience and even less self-esteem, they must find permanent housing and a means of supporting themselves and their children. Statistics show Less than 30% of them will succeed the first time they leave abusive homes! The others will return to a life of fear, pain and anguish because they see no other option. Over 3,000 women each year are killed in the USA by their partners/husbands.
The Battered Women’s Foundation . . .
The BWF is a visionary agency founded in 1995 to aggressively fight the growing problem of domestic violence. It takes more than temporary shelter to begin a new life of independence and self-sufficiency. It requires a complete lifestyle change a change founded in renewed hope for the future. The BWF, incorporated as a 501(c)(3), is faith based on this understanding and designed to complement the work of other organizations by providing long-term assistance to women attempting to break the cycle of abuse and hopelessness.
In addition to the expected services such as counseling, emergency food and clothing and temporary shelter, the BWF offers a vital and unique two-year program designed to heal all areas of a client’s life. Clients receive assistance with permanent housing, education, child-care, transportation, job search skills, food and clothing, medical care and, most importantly, rebuilding their self-esteem and giving them hope.
With a very small budget and a goal of helping over 2000 moms and kids a year, the Foundation depends heavily on volunteers, corporate and private donations, and a network of services working together.
The Results . . .
With the assistance of the Battered Women’s Foundation, many clients are able to become self-sufficient and effectively break the cycle of abuse for themselves, their children and future generations of their family.
Up to 50 percent of all homeless women and children in this country are fleeing domestic violence.
